Researchers have found that the choice of flooring materials can affect or alter the pressure on healthcare workers, patients, and service providers. Dr. Debra D. Harris conducted a study titled "The Impact of Ground Materials on Environmental Pressure: A Comparative Study of Three Ground Materials in Healthcare Environments.".

This study was conducted in an older hospital and over a period of 42 weeks, tested three types of flooring materials for patient ward corridors: terrazzo, rubber, and square carpets. The healthcare system is also involved in this study as it is preparing to build a new hospital and intends to use this research data as a reference for the ground materials of its new facilities.

The environmental pressure factors in medical facilities include ergonomic factors and human health factors. This study investigated the effect of different surface materials on sound levels in corridors. This study involves the views and preferences of healthcare workers, as well as the patient's experience, as it is related to the frequency of quietness in the area around the patient's room.

The final research results indicate that square carpets perform better in reducing sound levels by absorbing, reducing noise levels, reducing the impact of noise on the work of healthcare workers and patients, and improving speech privacy. Square carpets also have a positive impact on air quality, reducing discomfort caused by reflected glare, increasing comfort of the soles of the feet, and improving environmental comfort and aesthetics. Personalized design options are wider. Therefore, it is recommended that the medical system choose square carpets as the preferred flooring material.
