Modern Carpet Tile

The recent surge in interest in modern carpet tile designs is evident in the number of retailers who now stock a wide range of tile products.

Carpet tiles have been around since the 1970's when they were first introduced as flooring options for commercial properties such as hospitals, restaurants and offices. Since their introduction, tile has evolved to become not only a popular flooring material but has also become one of the most popular materials for installation in homes. Carpet tile's relatively low price, relatively easy installation process, practicality and durability make it a very attractive option for many home owners and designers. There are two main types of modern carpet tiles designs available today: flat woven carpets and needlefelt carpets. Flat woven carpet is made by weaving long, even strands of carpet backing fabric into narrow layers.

The original design concept was developed by Easycarpeter which was originally intended for use as room dividers. Today the basic concept still applies but the fabric is no longer a flat, even weave. These modern carpets are typically much tighter and more tightly wound than the traditional broadloom carpet varieties.Another option available in modern carpet tiles is the needlefelt variety. A needlefelt pattern or design is made by looping yarn, yarns or synthetic threads between foam pads and then braiding the strips or mats back onto themselves. This looped construction produces an irregular yet intricate border that can be used as an interior flooring solution or as a decorative detail on walls. Each needlefelt tile is unique due to the manufacturing process. Some are made using traditional loom weights and some are made by hand. The latter are often less expensive due to the increased skill level required to produce each piece.
